Why I teach...
My name is Alicen Underwood, and I'm a piano teacher in Werribee, Melbourne.
I have always loved music, of almost every kind!
When I learnt piano, many years ago, the focus was on classical music, scales, and passing exams. Of course, classical pieces are lovely and certainly worth exploring. However, there is so much more to music, and so many different styles these days.
Now that I'm a piano teacher, I encourage creativity and exploration in my lessons. Along with learning to read written music, we play with chords and lead sheets, and experiment with composing and improvising. We try out various styles of music, including pop, blues and favourite movie themes.
Every student is an individual, and I really enjoy getting to know each student and helping them follow their own path, at their own pace. I encourage each student to believe in themselves and their ability to achieve anything they set their minds to.
I teach piano because I enjoy seeing children and adults enriched by their own personal musical journey.
Music has been a constant companion through the ups and downs of my life, and being able to play piano is something I've appreciated more and more as I get older. I can't imagine my life without music.
